I had so much fun making the large sailboat that I wanted to create a smaller version, this time with a bit more detail and the full heat-patina color spectrum on the sails. Each sail shifted through blue to purple to gold, finishing in the silver shine of bare steel. Every sail was frozen mid-billow.

For the rigging, I didn't want to fake it. I spun stainless wire in my drill until it twisted into rope, giving each line the same weight and texture you'd expect on a real boat. The hull carried pencil-ground details like windows and seams, all the marks that suggest long miles at sea. Below the hull I layered steel waves that pitch and roll. I pushed blues into the surface of the water, then torched the wave crests until they bubbled and frothed like sea foam.
This was one of those projects where the process felt like storytelling. Every sail, every line, every wave was a decision about how to make this metal sailboat sculpture feel like wind and water.

This sailboat sculpture is wall hanging, made entirely of stainless steel, colored using only heat patinas, and is safe to be kept outdoors!
